Sustainability: What Does it Mean and Why do we Hear the Word so Often?

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sounds easy enough doesn’t it, a little bit like being told as a kid to “not eat all the cake, leave some for your brother or sister.!”  It’s all about good manners really. The reason we are hearing the word so often now is that if we continue using resources as we have been, nobody will be eating cake. However, what if we don’t have the knowledge or the means to do anything about it, or we think we don’t.

Hey, you gotta be kidding me if you haven’t been bombarded with every media talking about climate change for the last 20 years, so you can’t use the old “opps I didn’t know it was so serious” caper.

So, the time has come for us all to take our place at the “Sustainable Think about our Environment” starting line and all be participants in the race to make a change while we still can.

Read below to learn how easy it is to do your part for sustainability including:

  • We can all make a positive difference
  • Retrain yourself one habit at a time
  • Be consistent with good habits

We can all Make a Positive Difference

Sustainable materials to useStep One is to realise that YES each one of us can make a positive difference…. it’s only one plastic straw said seven billion people and a few thousand turtles breathe a sigh of relief.

Retrain Yourself One Habit at a Time

Step Two is to retrain yourself one habit at a time. Each week make one choice that will make a difference…yes, I have remembered my Keep Cup for my coffee today that will save overflowing landfill and minimise ocean pollution one coffee at a time.

Be Consistent With Good Habits

Step Three is to be consistent with these good habits until you wouldn’t dream of asking for a single use plastic bag for your shopping that could end up being eaten in broken down small pieces by an endangered sea bird in the warm waters of some tropical not so clean paradise.

Embrace Sustainability

It all starts with a mindset, a will to be part of the change and not be afraid to make a stand and make the effort. (because it is an effort sometimes to make sure you have those cloth shopping bags with you.)

Remember that every small step that YOU take will help us move towards a flourishing sustainable future so that we ALL may eat healthy and wholesome cake.
